Gloucester, known as the gateway to the Barrington Tops, is a charming country town nestled in a valley under a range of hills known as The Bucketts. Today Gloucester is the principal town of a cattle-raising, dairying and mixed farming district.

Located approx. 4 hours North-East of Sydney or 90 minutes from Newcastle via the Pacific Highway and Bucketts Way. Your short detour off the Pacific Highway to Gloucester via the Bucketts Way is one of the state’s oldest tourist drives, and for good reason. Short scenic drives around the district take you to dramatic mountain ranges, breathtaking views, beautiful valleys and platypus-filled rivers. Gloucester is a pretty country town with a remarkable backdrop of the Bucketts Mountains surrounded by three rivers, productive farming valleys and high forested mountains. Plus the golf course is the prettiest in the state!

Take a day trip to the well known Barrington Tops and enjoy a fun-filled adventure packed day as there are plenty to do. Try white water paddling by canoe or kayak, the rivers are good for all experience levels, or try horse riding along scenic riverside trails. Plus there are plenty of walking trails in the parks that take you to rarely visited waterfalls, wetlands and breathtaking lookouts.

The town was named after an Australian Agricultural Company outstation which had been named Gloucester by the manager, Robert Dawson. Dawson observed that the “romantic scenery” of the river valley reminded him of the undulating countryside of Gloucestershire and so he named the town after Gloucester.
